(The meeting did not have a quorum due to weather conditions so no official business requiring a vote could be addressed.) In attendance: Dr. Carraway, David Davis, Windy Beddingfield
Chairwoman Carraway introduced the new Board member who was in attendance, David Davis, as well as the new CC Library Manager Keisha Evans.
Reading of the treasury report.
The Board discussed that they are currently reviewing bylaws regarding the proper procedure for new appointments to the Regional Board.
The Board addressed a library staff request to consider moving the LAB meetings back to Wednesday. The meetings had previously been held on Wednesdays but were moved to Thursday to accommodate the schedule of a previous Board member. Since the member is no longer a member of the Board, the library staff suggests returning the meetings to Wednesday to avoid scheduling conflicts with a Seniors’ tax class scheduled in the larger classroom B/C. The issue could not be decided at this meeting due to a lack of a quorum but Chairwoman Carraway suggested that Board members may see if it is possible to approve by email/virtual meeting to go into effect for the February meeting so as to have access to the larger Classroom B/C space.
Library Manager Keisha Evans reported on her decisions of the book reconsideration requests that had been submitted prior to the Board decision to pause reconsiderations pending implementation of the “Guidelines for Determining Book Placement”. Ms. Evans comments and decisions for each book are as follows:
Teo’s Tutu: no profanity, no violence, no sexual content or sexuality; remain in picture books
And Tango Makes Three: no profanity, no violence, no sexual content or sexuality; remain in picture books
Drama: no profanity, no violence, no sexual content or sexuality; move from graphic novel to middle ground (new section between juvenile and young adult)
The Other Boy: moderate profanity, moderate violence, mild sexual content; move from juvenile to young adult
Gracefully Grayson: no profanity, mild violence, no sexual content; move from juvenile to young adult
Gender Queer: moderate profanity, no violence, moderate sexual content; move from Graphic Novels to adult section
Flamer: moderate profanity, moderate violence, moderate sexual content; move from Graphic Novels to adult section
Ryan and Avery: mild profanity, mild violence, mild sexual content; remain in young adult
Public Comments:
Six library patrons signed up to speak. Four were present and they all spoke in opposition to the Guidelines (including myself), how they have been implemented, and how they may negatively impact the Library and its patrons. One who was unable to attend had their statement read by another patron who was present (I read this statement). This statement was also in opposition to the Guidelines. The other patron who had signed up was not in attendance.
After public comments, Chairwoman Carraway asked Ms. Evans about how the matter of the entire Human Body section having been relocated had been addressed. Ms. Evans indicated that other than a small number she was still examining in more detail, these books had been returned to their original location.
