Today, my attorney Wade Herring II, sent out this letter to the Regional Board of the Greater Clarks Hill Regional Library system and the Interim Directors. With the overturning of so many board members, I want to give the new board members an opportunity to rescind the guidelines and restore all of the books that have moved already. I could write a big long background but I’m going to keep this brief. You can feel free to read through the rest of my posts if you want or need more background.
I do want to say though that I have maintained from the first email correspondence I had with the Columbia County Board of Commissioners that I felt the guidelines they adopted for our libraries were unconstitutional - specifically a violation of the First Amendment. Many might not agree with me. However, as a Veteran of the United States Army, I took an oath to the US Constitution and I feel very strongly that I need to do everything in my power to push back against any government actions that I believe are in violation of the Constitution, as is also my right.
It is a shame that it has come to this. One would think public servants on the Library Board and the County BoC who appoint them would put the good of the library system and its users ahead of their own political views and the bullying of a a couple of local radicals.
As you mentioned there are many who may not agree with you so why not try to compromise instead of all or nothing so everyone gets some satisfaction. Based on your attorney’s letter it sounds like only the attorneys will “win”.
